The annual Week of Engineering is happening next week with free expos in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch on Saturday 18 August.

Experience Aotearoa’s engineering brilliance at the Week of Engineering!

From robots, to hovercrafts, to rockets and virtual reality, the Week of Engineering has something for everyone.

Running from 13th - 18th August in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, the Week of Engineering is all about showcasing amazing engineering from around the country and attracting young people to the profession.

Engineering New Zealand Chief Executive, Susan Freeman-Greene, says the Week offers people the opportunity to feed their natural curiosity and interact with the latest, future-led engineering technology.

"The Week of Engineering will showcase what the future holds. Tomorrow’s engineers will have jobs that don’t even exist today - and we want to open young minds to this world of possibility.

"More than 75 engineering organisations from around New Zealand will give the public a hands-on look at what engineers do - perfect for kids and anyone who wants an inside look at how things work."

At the expo in Christchurch, people can weld chocolate to gain an understanding of bridge design; or experience human 3D facial scanning to learn about the latest medical engineering technology.

In other centres, find out how virtual and augmented reality feels, and even witness how pressure builds up in a rocket.

You can play with drones and robotic vehicles built by engineering students. There’ll be competitions, lego pits and interactive displays.

There’s also a schools programme, where students in years 11-13 visit firms and project sites to get a glimpse into the world of engineering. Over 30 engineering firms around the country will be hosting students during the week.

Ms Freeman-Greene says the industry has come together behind the Week because New Zealand needs more engineers.

"Engineering is a wide-ranging and creative profession, yet there exists a large skills shortage in New Zealand. Come and check out all engineering has to offer at the Week of Engineering."
