A public consultation to find out what well-being means to New Zealand starts today, Stats NZ said.

“Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand will bring together measures which assess our well-being and sustainability, putting them on a level playing field with our existing economic indicators,” Government Statistician Liz MacPherson said.

This broad set of measures will be a way of holistically measuring New Zealand’s progress and will be available online for the public, as well as businesses, NGOs, and government to access for their decision-making.

Stats NZ has been working to ensure Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand will align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, as well as with Treasury’s Living Standards Framework.

Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand will be peer reviewed by international statistical offices with similar collections of indicators.

“These indicators will be designed to be independent and to paint an enduring picture of how New Zealand is tracking, and will help underpin robust decision-making for years to come,” says Ms MacPherson.

“But to shape the measures which will be included in Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand, we need your help.

“That’s why Stats NZ wants to hear from you about what you’d like to see represented in the set of indicators. You might want to see measures about the state of our health, our environment, our infrastructure, or our social connections.”
