Singapore Airlines set to bring price war on Wellington to Melbourne route

Singapore Airlines' inaugural flight from Singapore and Canberra touched down in Wellington in 2016. The route has now been ditched in favour of flying to the capital via Melbourne.

Singapore Airlines' new flights between Wellington and Melbourne appear set to bring a price war between the capital and a popular sporting and cultural destination, subsidised by ratepayers.

After just 19 months, Singapore Airlines has ditched its "capital connection" flights which connected Wellington and Singapore through Canberra, the Australian capital.

The route has been highly controversial, after it emerged that a ratepayer-backed fund had agreed to provide millions of dollars in "marketing support" for the route over up to a decade.
