Travelling to China? Your Customs Agent Could be a Robot

Travelling to China? Your Customs Agent Could be a Robot
Last month, customs officials at the Gongbei Port of Entry began using Sanbot, a humanoid robot designed and built by QIHAN Technology Company, to help increase efficiency, security and customer experience at the busy border crossing. According to QIHAN, Sanbot is a service robot powered by a cloud-enabled app ecosystem designed to be deployed in a wide variety of settings including retail locations, schools, hospitals and more. “The use of Sanbot by Gongbei Customs demonstrates just how versatile Sanbot’s AI platform truly is,” said Zhuang Yongjun, chief technology officer at QIHAN. “We truly believe that robots like Sanbot have the…

Coastal shipping critical to New Zealand earthquake relief efforts

The main truck rail line in New Zealand's South Island has been decimated The main truck rail line in New Zealand's South Island has been decimated Coastal shipping has again come to the rescue after New Zealand’s supply chain was “decimated” by Monday’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake in North Canterbury and on-going aftershocks nationwide. With massive slips cutting off vital road and rail infrastructure at the top of the “Shaky Isles’” South Island, feeder shipping is leading the relief effort to get stalled freight moving. Pacifica Shipping ceo Steve Chapman said inquiries “have gone through the roof”, reminiscent of the aftermath…

GraysOnLine look toward Asia and the Middle East

Cranes and trailers sold off by bankrupt mining contractors are proving a boon for auction group GraysOnline as it sells less consumer goods and focuses on machinery and equipment, targeting international buyers in Asia and the Middle East. "I would like Grays to be to plant and machinery what Google is to search," chief executive Mark Bayliss told The Australian Financial Review. Australia currently has "an excess of supply" in mining and agricultural equipment, partially due to the resources slump which forced many companies into administration, he said. Are Americans Moving To New Zealand, Australia, Canada Since Trump Won?

Will there be a steady flow of Americans moving to Canada, Australia, New Zealand or anywhere else because Donald Trump won the election? Anyone who’s been on social media this week has probably seen the flood of comments from people saying that they will move. Canada’s immigration website crashed in the hours after Trump was declared the winner, possibly because of Americans looking into moving there. But just how serious are they? It’s possible that after taking all into consideration, they will change their minds. Even Warren Buffett, who was a strong backer of Hillary Clinton, says he is “100%…

Big bag better way to handle greenwash

An award winning effluent storage ‘bag’ new in New Zealand is an effective alternative to open ponds or tanks, distributor TechniPharm told Rural News. The 15,000m3 bag (or bladder) was developed in the Netherlands to comply with regulatory demands for farms to cut greenhouse gases, and to help recover more nutrients and energy from animal waste. Originally designed for sludge, the Ecobag in NZ is seen as ideal for holding dairy yard-wash water. A Rangiora farmer recently commissioned a system Continue to full article

This election has been about manufacturing.

James Anderton wrote on Engineering.com that with the media in full damage control mode over Donald Trump’s victory over Secretary of State Clinton, it’s clear that no one in the newsrooms of America gets it. “How could this happen?” they ask rhetorically, along with scores of Hollywood A-list celebrities and inside-the-beltway political hacks and amateur pundits, all bewildered that a system so programmed to plug Clinton into the Oval Office could derail in such spectacular fashion. James Carville, the brains behind Bill Clinton’s 1992 win, coined the simple expression, “it’s the economy, stupid” and it became the unofficial slogan of…

Simpro Products Proudly Made in New Zealand Sustainable, Innovative

Although Simpro has a global supply chain, our highest-volume products are still manufactured in Auckland. In a globalised world, it may seem incongruous tomanufacture machinery in an isolated first-world nation whose largest exports are milk and tourism. But we’ve stayed in New Zealand for good reasons: Like many companies based ‘Down Under’, our products must often operate in extremely isolated and harsh environments – places like Mount Cook, in the Southern Alps, and Alice Springs, in the heart of the Australian Outback – 1,000 miles from the nearest city. Simpro products need to be uncompromisingly tough, reliable, and simple to…

What can we learn from Trump’s victory? Writes Gareth

Firstly, polls can get it wrong, particularly when turnout is low, or people are ashamed to admit who they are voting for. In the 80’s America had their own version of Rogernomics; Reagenomics. Much like here a lot of the reform was sorely needed, but it left some socia l wounds that have since festered. Now we are seeing the outcome of that. The idea of Reaganomics (like Rogernomics and Ruthenasia) was that if you freed up the economy, people would create more wealth, and that extra wealth would eventually benefit everyone (trickle down). The trouble is that trickle down…
