Autodesk has announced the newest version of Netfabb, their additive manufacturing and design software. Netfabb provides a toolset for managing printers, setting up models, simulating prints, and generating lattices. Netfabb 2019.0 brings enhancements to simulation, latticing, cloud storage, machine workspaces, and more.

When Autodesk announced that it would be moving some of its major software products to the cloud in 2015, a reactionary backlash began from some of the more vocal content creators who use their software on a regular basis. The transition from perpetual licenses to subscriptions was justified by the company in order to make recurring payments more predictable, to increase the rate of new users signing up and to decrease piracy by using cloud subscription verification processes. A story from from Reuters has generated rumors suggesting that private equity firm CVC Capital (CVC) will be acquiring MSC Software (MSC) for $800 million dollars. But why should engineers care?
