CADPRO Systems Design Challenge – Fusion Fishing

CADPRO Systems Design Challenge – Fusion Fishing

Welcome to the first CADPRO Systems Design Challenge – Fusion Fishing.

The idea is to design the best fishing lure you can using Autodesk Fusion 360 and the supplied hook model.

An example lure, model created by Korbász Krisztián, is shown  here.

The rules are simple:

  • Deadline for entry submissions is Tuesday 31st January 2017 at 12pm NZST.
  • One entry per person.
  • You can place as many hooks as you like on the lure body, but you must use the supplied hook model.
  • Entries will be judged on the originality of the concept, its functionality, the quality of entry execution, and design-specific criteria such as weight and design life cycle thinking.
  • CADPRO Systems will judge the entries. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Designs should include:

  • Original content (no cheating!)
  • Parametric modelling (features from sketches)
  • Freeform modelling
  • Analysis
  • Rendering (pretty pictures)

Some nice extras:

  • CAM toolpaths
  • Drawings
  • 3d printed part!

How To Enter?

To enter this competition, you’ll just need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Download the FusionFishingHook .F3D archive that is supplied in this project in the Fusion 360 gallery.

Step 2: Create a new Fusion 360 project and upload the hook model to the project.

Step 3: Create a new design in Fusion360, and design your lure, utilising the standard hook model.

Step 4: Export your finished hook model as an .F3D archive.

Step 5: Create a new project in the Fusion 360 gallery, and upload your archive file.

Step 6: Add some notes and info about the process you went through, and your design ideas.

Step 7: Let us know where to find your entry by sending us a tweet @CADPROSystems or a message on Instagram @cadpro_systemsDon’t forget to add #CadproFusionFishing

Key Dates

Competition is from 15th December 2016 to 31st January 2017 at 12:00PM NZST.The winners will be announced on Thursday 2nd February 2017.

Good luck and get designing!

Autodesk Clear on Cloud and Collaboration

Autodesk Clear on Cloud and Collaboration

At this year's Autodesk University (AU), which was attended by 10,000 people, Autodesk made several announcements that make its software quite attractive for manufacturing firms of all sizes. The company and its partners showcased several applications that address latest trendssuch as generative design, augmented virtual (AR) and virtual reality (VR), additive manufacturing, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics. As CEO Carl Bass said, “Unless your team is collaborating well, you can’t even compete, much less win.”

Autodesk's core strategy has been to democratize design software so that smaller companies with limited resources can use them to design and deliver the latest high-quality products. Subscription-based cloud delivery fits the core strategy of making its software affordable and enables collaboration in and among teams. The company is on a trend away from desktop applications, with an emphasis on delivering applications in the cloud.

Autodesk is building a cloud portfolio for each industry that it says is complete, connected and on-demand. Its cloud-based Fusion 360 and BIM 360 are built on the Forge developer platform that will now be available through a browser in addition to native mobile applications.

Drawings in Autodesk Fabrication ESTmep and CAMduct

Matthew Weake is a valuable member of CADPRO System's Autodesk training and support team.  In regular conatct with operators he is in the unique position of being able to identify those procedures that require a little more attention - creating drawings in Autodesk Fabrication ESTmep and CAMduct is one of them.

Here is an article that has been prepared by Matthew and can be accessed in full on the CADPRO Systems website

Creating drawings in Autodesk Fabrication ESTmep and CAMduct is not the most intuitive or CAD-like experience so I thought I would share a few tips here to get you started.

Setup Report Printer

When designing your reports, you may find you use up lots of paper only to find the report is not quite right.

A useful tip here is to add a pdf printer as your report printer until you have the Report looking like you want. This will save paper and many trips to the printer.

Most printers can be made to print black and white as default and the options can be found in the printer setup dialog box. Try the awesome Bluebeam Revu CAD – it does a lot more than just creating great pdf’s. Bluebeam Revu

Add Layouts

To create drawings in Autodesk Fabrication ESTmep of a selection of items you should add a layout with those items in it.

Most of us have seen the Global Tab at the bottom of the page but paid no notice to it. It is, in fact, the second tip here. You should add your own Layout Tab and give it a short meaningful name. My example uses really good names – test and test2!

Fusion 360 Gets a Major Update

Fusion 360 Gets a Major Update

Fusion 360's engineers have continued their long march toward their end goal of creating an end-to-end product design package with their expansive November update. As of November 8th, Fusion users were treated to a number of new features, including simulation and milling enhancements as well as updates to drawings. In this piece, we’ll preview some of Autodesk's more interesting Fusion upgrades.

Fusion Adopts the Nastran SolverTo kick off its November update, the Fusion team has announced that Autodesk's 2014 acquisition of Nastran will now benefit 360's CAE portfolio. For users who are running simulations in the cloud, this solver upgrade won’t ever be noticed, but for those who prefer to do their simulations locally, a quick Nastran solver installation will run the first time you attempt a local study. With the addition of the Nastran, Fusion is gaining one of the best tested and consistently updated solvers on the planet.
