Vodafone, Spark and Chorus working together to restore services to Kaikoura

Telecommunications infrastructure providers, Vodafone, Spark and Chorus, are working closely together to explore all options to restore services to Kaikoura. The earthquake damaged a major fibre optic cable that runs from the top of the South Island, along State Highway 1 through Clarence and Kaikoura, to Christchurch, which supports both fixed line and mobile networks. Six breaks have been identified along this cable, and the conditions and nature of the damage to the cable and the adjacent State Highway means that restoration work is going to take a considerable amount of time. Victoria scientists scoop sought-after awards

  Three Victoria University of Wellington researchers are among a small group of emerging New Zealand scientists to receive highly sought-after Rutherford Discovery Fellowships from the Royal Society of New Zealand. Air New Zealand signs significant new components contract

Air New Zealand has signed a licensing agreement to overhaul and repair auxiliary power units (APUs) produced by Honeywell Aerospace at its Christchurch engineering and maintenance base. The eight year deal will see Air New Zealand as the only certified Honeywell maintenance shop for the APU 131-9A model in Oceania and will see the airline maintain and repair APUs, which power aircraft while on the ground, for Air New Zealand and third party customers based around the Asia Pacific region. Commission proposes to decline NZME/Fairfax merger

The Commerce Commission has today published its draft determination on NZME and Fairfax’s application under the Commerce Act seeking authorisation to merge their media operations in New Zealand. The Commission’s preliminary view is that it should decline to authorise the merger. The proposed merger would bring together New Zealand’s two largest newspaper networks and two largest news websites. Commission proposes to continue telephone number portability

The Commerce Commission has today released a draft determination proposing to continue the regulation of number portability services for both local and mobile telephone numbers for another 5 years. Number portability enables a customer to switch telecommunications providers while retaining the same telephone number. Telecommunications Commissioner Dr Stephen Gale said the draft determination included proposals to make some changes to the number portability terms to improve its efficiency and workability.
