Advisory: Media Advisory - Just Transition Roundtable

02 Oct: 14:50  | On Friday the 5th of October, the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions will be hosting in Wellington the first ever New Zealand Roundtable for business, unions, environmental groups and government on a Just Transition to a net zero emissions economy.

This event will provide a chance to talk about global and domestic experiences of transitioning to sustainable energy and technology in a way that is fair, democratic, and meets the urgency of climate change.

The Roundtable will bring together local and international speakers, including the Ministers for Climate Change, Workplace and Industrial Relations and Energy and Resources, and representatives from CFMMEU (Australia), a video briefing from Canada, New Zealand trade unions, Greenpeace, Tuaropaki Trust, and Straterra along with other key stakeholders in New Zealand’s energy transition.

The keynote speech will be from Samantha Smith, the Director of the International Trade Union Confederation’s Just Transition Unit, who has previously worked in environmental organisations (WWF International) and the oil industry (StatOil). Samantha has direct experience in divestment from coal with Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, and is also available to interview on Thursday the 4th by arrangement.

When: 5 October 2018, 8.30am - 4.20pm. The agenda is accessible online. Note that most sessions are open to media, but the event itself is invite only due to space. Keynote sessions will be livestreamed to the NZCTU Together Facebook page.
