Victoria University of Wellington’s Council is expected to make a final decision next Monday (24 September) on a proposal to change the University’s legal name to ‘University of Wellington’.

The Council made a draft decision in July to recommend that the Minister of Education approve University of Wellington as the new legal name for the University, and to adopt a new Māori name of Te Herenga Waka. The draft decision included a commitment to the ongoing use of the word ‘Victoria’ to ensure its heritage is honoured and maintained. At its September meeting, the Council will discuss a recommendation from University management that the draft decision be confirmed. Discussion and a decision on the recommendation will be held in the public section of the meeting. The Agenda and papers for the Council meeting are available on the University’s website. The Council meeting will be held on Monday 24 September at 12.30pm in the Council Chamber, Level 2 of the Hunter Building on Kelburn Parade.
