Electricity price review welcome, Greens will continue to push for cheaper, cleaner, power for Kiwis

The Green Party is welcoming the release of stage one Electricity Price Review report and will continue to push for a transition to 100% renewable energy whilst ensuring fair pricing for houses and businesses alike, Green Party Energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes said today.

“We welcome the report and look forward to the next stage. The report is timely as the electricity sector is facing the biggest change in decades from technologies like electric vehicles and solar.“We agree with the report that the electricity system isn’t working for everyone, and in particular households aren’t getting a good deal.“Too many Kiwis are suffering from energy poverty and rising power bills which is not right in a country with a wealth of cheap, clean generation.“The Green Party will continue to push the Government to do the right thing on regulatory settings that enable the electricity industry to transition to 100% renewable energy, whilst ensuring fair pricing for homes and businesses. The current status quo isn’t working.“The Greens have long called for a pricing incentive mechanism to encourage households to reduce energy consumption, and for improving the low user tariff to make solar power more cost effective as a benefit.“The Green Party is focused on delivering cheaper, cleaner, smarter power for Kiwis and we are working constructively with the Government to achieve it”.
