More than 200 energy sector leaders from around the world and New Zealand have started arriving in Wellington ahead of tomorrow’s Asia Pacific Energy Leaders’ Summit.

The BusinessNZ Energy Council (BEC) and World Energy Council (WEC) are hosting their biennial Summit tomorrow and on Thursday at the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa.

The programme features a broad range of international speakers from Amazon, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Daikin, Uber, plus innovators from Finland and the Silicon Valley.

Day 1 features an exclusive high-level business and policy-maker Roundtable facilitated by WEC CEO Christoph Frei. The day closes with a Cocktail Function for all attendees.

Day 2 will see New Zealand Minister of Energy and Innovation the Hon Megan Woods and Minister of Climate Change the Hon James Shaw hosting a Gala Lunch and Networking Event to discuss the economic transition faced by countries that are moving to decarbonise their economies.

Also in attendance at the Gala Lunch will be Prime Minister of the Cook Islands the Hon Henry Puna, Kiribati’s Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy the Hon Ruateki Tekaiara, and Vanuatu’s Minister of Lands Geology and Mines the Hon Alfred Maoh.

The New Zealand Government is attracting international attention for its ambitious climate change goals, says WEC Secretary-General Dr Christoph Frei.

"Climate change is a global issue, and one that necessitates leadership and collaboration between countries if action is to be effective.

"The Summit is an opportunity to showcase our respective country capabilities in the provision of renewable energy and to demonstrate leadership on climate change action."

BEC Chair David Caygill says the Summit will share insights on how to accelerate innovation, design new customer-centric business models at a time of rapid change, and create the future rather than predicting it.

"What will the future energy system look like and how can you be a part of it? This event will challenge ideas and reach new understandings as we look to futureproof the energy systems of the Asia Pacific region and beyond. It will change future business decisions."
