Stab-resistant multi-purpose harnesses for Police’s patrol dogs released this week.

The first 10 stab-resistant multi-purpose harnesses for Police’s patrol dogs are being put to action this week.

The ‘Mako’ harness will be fitted with layered polymer panels to shield the vital organs from stabbing and slashing. The robust overall design is made from milspec nylon and trelleborg material which does not absorb moisture and also gives the animal protection from blows and kicks.

When the animals are in this harness, they’ll have a similar level of protection as an officer does when wearing their stab resistant body armour vest.

Ten dogs based across Wellington, Palmerston North, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Nelson, Whangarei, Auckland, Christchurch, Rotorua and Tauranga, will this week receive their new kit.

First stab-resistant harnesses for Police dogs rolled out

Wellington patrol dog Dakota got to try on her new harness for the first time today and was very happy with her new attire.

Wellington Dog Section head Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson says this is an exciting time for the 10 dogs and their handlers receiving the new harness.

“It’s a bit of a milestone for the dog section in terms of staff and dog safety.

"We’ve been really aware over the years that our dogs had only speed and mobility for protection, but with this new harness we’ve given them another level of protection alongside that,” says Senior Sergeant Davidson.

The harness weighs just over one kilogram and is designed so it won’t impair agility and speed, dries quickly and can be worn throughout a shift.

The harnesses have been designed by Hamilton-based specialist Sabre Tactical NZ and are being manufactured in New Zealand.

The remaining 120 harnesses are being rolled out to dogs across the country and the whole dog force will be wearing the harness within three months.

See www.youtube.com/policenz (link is external) for a video of patrol dog Ike and the harness in action.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 02, 2016 - ThirstBat™, a fully functioning range of sports bats that also double as drinking vessels, developed by Kiwi entrepreneur Torben Landl and his (now a Kiwi) business partner Matt Taggart, will launch today and will be available for purchase on the Kickstarter platform, taking their backyard creation live to the world. The entrepreneurs are hoping for a swell of support to get them over their first hurdle of pre-selling $20,000 worth of bats.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/423469748/thirstbat

“Now is the chance for people to step up to the plate or to the “crease,” and turn baseball and cricket with friends into a real party,” said Landl. “ThirstBat™, the bat/bong combination is the solution, and who else but a couple of Kiwis could come up with it?”

Nelson Airport announces $32m redevelopment

Nelson Airport announces $32m redevelopment

Nelson Airport has released its plans for a $32m terminal redevelopment, which will begin later this year. The project will take approximately 24 months to complete in a staged programme with over half of the new build able to occur on a green field site. The new terminal will cater for growth projections out to 2035, when 1.4m passengers a year are forecast to pass through the facility.

Nelson Airport Chief Executive Rob Evans says the project will greatly enhance the customer experience with more space for seating, airline lounges, toilets, new retail spaces and increased car parking. Airlines have welcomed the upgrade to improve the current terminal facilities, which have become stretched over recent years. The current terminal was constructed in 1974 and with some modifications has served the region well for the past 42 years. In the last financial year 865,000 passengers passed through the terminal, which also created a big increase in people meeting and dropping off friends and family.

The cost of the redevelopment will be met 100% by Nelson Airport Ltd with external funding. No ratepayer money will be sought and there will be no reduction in the annual dividend Nelson Airport pays to its Shareholders (Nelson City and Tasman District Councils).

“This is a very exciting step in the evolution of Nelson Airport and its role as the gateway to our region”, says Nelson Airport CEO Rob Evans. “We’ve used the latest industry best practise techniques to determine how this facility works for passengers and its operators, and as a result have created a plan that will see every element of the airport design improved. Visually it will be magnificent; locally sourced timber products, floor to ceiling windows, a spacious open plan style and a unique roof design will all work in harmony to make this space feel very special and reflect the beauty of the region. Functionally we will increase car parking by 300 spaces to cater for 900 vehicles and create more room for taxis, buses and rental cars. We’ll have a much more intuitive layout for passengers with an increased check-in area and departure lounge, new retail space, double the number of toilets and more food and beverage offerings.”

The new terminal design is modular and flexible, so that it can be easily scaled up in future if demand exceeds the projections.

“Mayors Rachel Reese and Richard Kempthorne said that they were delighted to confirm that the two Council shareholders had given their approval to the investment at meetings last week. The planned development constitutes a major transaction under the company’s rules and therefore required shareholder approval.

“The high quality of the Board’s work made the decision for the two shareholder councils a relatively easy one. It’s also reassuring that the Company can carry the investment on its balance sheet and fund it from revenue growth without affecting dividends. The growth in passenger numbers that this development will cater for plus the future growth forecasts give us confidence that the airport will be very well placed to support our growing economy, visitors and residents of both of our districts.” the Mayors said.

Air New Zealand has welcomed the announcement of the new terminal. Bruce Parton, Chief Operating Officer says that “Nelson is integral in our network and the new terminal delivers on our drive to provide exceptional customer service and an enhanced quality of travel experience. The airport team has consulted extensively over the past 12 months and continues to consult on the design elements. We are very pleased with the plans that have been revealed and look forward to working with Nelson Airport through the challenges of completing this development to achieve the optimal outcome for our customers”.

Grant Kerr, Jetstar Head of New Zealand, says the airline is very supportive of the need for a new terminal development. “Nelson is one of our most popular regional destinations and we fully understand the airport’s need to build a terminal that can cope with the significant growth in passenger numbers.” “We’re working closely with Nelson Airport on the design concept to ensure it meets our operational and cost requirements.”

The new terminal design was created by Studio Pacific Architecture and is managed by Aesculus Project Management. Dunning Thornton and CGW are the engineers.

Another step forward for Puhoi to Warkworth

Transport Minister Simon Bridges has welcomed today’s announcement that the NZ Transport Agency will enter into preferred bidder negotiations with the Northern Express Group for the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway project north of Auckland.

The 18.5km Puhoi to Warkworth motorway will form the first section of the Puhoi to Wellsford motorway project, one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance identified as being as key to economic growth.

“Today’s news marks another step forward in the Government’s strategy of enabling economic growth in Northland and providing a safer, more reliable transport link between between Northland and the upper North Island freight triangle of Auckland, Waikato and Tauranga,” Mr Bridges says.

Mr Bridges says delivering the project using a public private partnership (PPP) model will allow the project to benefit from private sector innovation and funding sources, increasing certainty of delivery and driving better value for money.

“A PPP opens the door for private sector innovations that are not always achievable under traditional public sector procurement methods. The size and complexity of the project means it will benefit from innovative outcomes in design and construction that the private sector will bring.

“The Government will continue to consider PPPs for other large-scale and complex transport infrastructure projects which could potentially benefit from the innovation and value-for-money that can be achieved through a PPP approach.”

The first state highway in New Zealand being delivered through a PPP is the Transmission Gully motorway project in Wellington which is expected to open in 2020.

The PPP contract for the Puhoi to Warkworth project is expected to be awarded by late 2016.

Emirates to Resume Flights to Conakry

Tuesday, August 2, 2016 — DUBAI, U.A.E., 2 AUGUST 2016 – Emirates has announced that it will resume flights to Conakry, the capital of Guinea, from 30th October 2016.

The flight to Conakry will be linked to Emirates’ four times weekly service between Dubai and Dakar, and will once again provide both business and leisure travellers in Guinea global connectivity through the airline’s network, particularly to destinations in the Middle East, West Asia and the Far East, with one convenient flight connection at its Dubai hub. Key destinations for travellers from Guinea include Dubai, Saudi Arabia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia and India.

A Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was introduced on the route between Dubai and Dakar today (2 August 2016) ahead of the relinking of Conakry, which will provide additional capacity and an enhanced on board customer experience. The aircraft will be in a three class cabin configuration, with eight private suites in First Class, 42 lie-flat seats in Business Class and 310 spacious seats in Economy Class.

Named the World’s Best Airline 2016 and the airline with the World’s Best Inflight Entertainment at the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards recently, all Emirates customers travelling on the aircraft can access over 2500 channels of on demand audio and visual entertainment on its ice system, featuring the latest movies, music, TV programmes, podcast and games. As with all Emirates flights, customers will also enjoy the hospitality of the airline’s multi-national cabin crew, as well as gourmet cuisine and complimentary beverages.

Once Conakry re-joins Emirates’ global network of more than 150 destinations, the airline will serve 28 destinations in Africa, providing expansive connectivity to and from the continent.

In addition to passenger operations, Emirates SkyCargo will also reintroduce its services and offer about 20 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight for key exports such as seafood, fruit, vegetables and textiles, and imports of mobile phones, pharmaceuticals and mining equipment.

Emirates flight EK797 will depart Dubai every Tuesday, and EK795 will depart Dubai every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 07h25 and arrive in Conakry at 13h40. The flight will then depart Conakry at 15h10 and arrive in Dakar 16h35. The return flight will depart Dakar at 18h05 and arrive in Dubai at 07h35 the next morning.

Emirates first launched its Dubai-Conakry-Dakar-Dubai route in October 2013. The airline made the decision to suspend services in August 2014 after a review of its operations.

Molly Manx Due Napier-then Sails to Western Sahara

Molly Manx Due Napier-then Sails to Western Sahara

Bulk Carrier’s arrival emphasises port’s role as nation’s fertiliser handling hub.

The arrival at Napier in August of the bulk carrier Mollie Manx emphasises the port’s role as New Zealand’s fertiliser hub.

The 60,000 tonne vessel was built six years ago and calls into Napier before resuming its outward voyage to Laayoune the capital of Western Sahara.

The vessel is registered in the Isle of Man and is owned by LT Ugland Shipping which specialises in owning large-capacity bulk carriers. It was built at the Tsuneishi Phillipine Shipyard.

Vessels in the Ugland fleet are all named after family members or something close to the family, in the case of Molly Manx, the family pet dog.

Port of Napier’s deep-water handling, especially in rapid turnaround, of this type of large scale bulk carrier, ensures that Hawkes Bay remains the centre of the fertiliser sector.

Meanwhile, the family ship owning company is run from the Isle of Man by founder Lars Ugland (pictured) and the Isle of Man flagged vessels are operated by specialist time and voyage charterers. In the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is a British self governing Crown Dependency and makes its own laws and sets its own taxes. The Isle of Man is a full Maritime Convention nation.
